Rethinking Retirement: What to Do AFTER You Retire
Retirees don’t have to exist. They can grow. They can learn new things and adapt to their new freedoms. What you dream about today might be radically different from what you want a few years into retirement. And, with seniors living longer now than ever before, it’s time to start living.
Life’s about Living serves senior adults and retirees, helping them find meaning as they age gracefully. In our show, we equip retirees to cope with the unique challenges of growing older. Our show interviews experts in the issues senior adults face coupled with inspiring interviews of seniors making the best of their aging opportunities.
Our show addresses faith, family and purpose in the context of aging. We equip seniors to face the challenges ahead. We believe that retirement is just the beginning for most individuals. If you are still breathing, then you have a purpose and a way to contribute to your family, your community and to the world. More than anyone, senior adults have experience and life lessons to share.
With longer lifespans, most retirees enjoy a longer retirement than any of their ancestors did. But living to 100 doesn’t mean you’ll feel the same at 98 as you did at 70. In time, everyone loses at least a bit of drive to go-go-go.
Re-evaluate your retirement periodically. Make adjustments as you need to. The more you plan ahead, the less likely you’ll find yourself in a situation where you need care but can’t pay for it, want to be near family but can’t move, or any other of the number of surprises that might creep up over the years.
Life's about Living is a show which helps those facing retirement find purpose. We interview real people who share their expertise and life lessons. Here are suggestions for what to do in retirement.
A Welsh saying says: “Perfect love does not come until you have your first grandchild.”
If you are looking for things to do in retirement, you might want to think about things you can do with your grandchildren. There is something unbelievably special about being a grandparent. You get all the magic of the child and not as much of the burden.
Retirement can be a wonderful time to spend time with your grandchildren. You can share experiences that are important to you and learn about things that are important to them. They can keep you young and you can help them grow up.
Relationships with others
Too often, retirees stick closer to home as they age. Their social groups dwindle until only a few remain. Retirees face loneliness. They feel isolated.
While there’s nothing wrong with being alone, friends help the aging stay connected.
It’s a good idea to find some younger friends. Spending time with someone in a different age or with other life experiences expose seniors see the world through a new set of lenses.
Staying Active
Find a place to go:
A new hobby, a new set of friends, a pet, makes a difference. Having people (or animals) that rely on you.
Maintain a schedule: Keep your mind active.
Be social: Having a purpose. Learning new things. These are all activities proven to keep you healthy and happy.
Serving others lets you give back to those in need in ways that benefit everyone involved. If you’re not working for a paycheck, you can pick and choose the jobs that you help.
Studies maintain that older adults who serve and who engage in volunteering report higher levels of contentment.” This seems to be across the board--no matter your gender, race or social status.
You Are Only as Old as You Feel
Your age is only a number. It should not define what you do in retirement. Pablo Picasso still produced art into his 90s. Thomas Edison invented the telephone at age 84. Laura Ingalls Wilder published her first book when she was 64.
Aging is a certainty but growing old is optional.
Write a Book
Now with self-publishing, it’s easier to write a book. seniors find they have more knowledge, time and resources. When you write, you leave a legacy. At Life’s about Living, we routinely interview author’s who have ventured into writing as a second career.
Life experiences might inspire you to write a how-to book. If you’ve led a most interesting life, you might have plenty of knowledge for a thought provoking memoir. Someone has to write the next Great American Novel?
See the World
Traveling for the retired ranks near the top of a lot of what to do after retirement wish lists. Some retirees have a certain locationcity they’ve always wanted to visit. And for others, a more consistent schedule of travel is a lot more exciting.
Some, when they were working, craved experiencing new places.
You don’t need to go far to have a great travel experience. You could travel through North America and never see everything. Even local travel could bring experiences that you didn’t know were there.
Have you considered renting a motorhome? What about a train adventure? An ocean cruise? Of course, flying can take you anywhere, but its expensive. For places to stay, retirees can be imaginative. Hotels. Air B and B. A private Bed and Breakfast.
The question is not what do to after you retire, but what do you want to do after you retire. Join us atLife’s about Living with Joe and Chuck. Let’s discuss the challenges and new opportunities--together.
